NATO membership is seen by many as the panacea for Polish
security and stable foreign relations... but what of the side effects?
By Jonathan M Steer
Strategic Change
Poland,
in the centre of Europe, has suffered throughout history from the
geo-political upheavals which have been a feature of the region.
Periods of stability have been interrupted in a dramatic way resulting
in the need for fundamental strategic reorientation by Poland with
it's neighbours.
The flexibility and resilience of the Polish people has been demonstrated
time and again by this need to change and endure.
The latest strategic re-orientation of Poland in 1989 is an excellent
example of the Polish ability to adapt to new circumstances in the
most positive way. The structural change in the strategic position,
the economy, and the pattern of trade has affected every aspect
of life in Poland, not least the geopolitical situation that Poland
now occupies.
One of the main aspects is Poland's membership of NATO and all
that it represents for security and international relationships.
